They can make mistakes, and their characters can be stupid. Anything is permissible as long as the audience is not mocked or treated as stupid. I say this while reviewing Locked In because, while there appear to be deliberate mistakes (and terrible decisions), the film cannot be accused of being dumb, absurd, or even bad. This is a heist film in which things go wrong and the bad guys are far more evil than you think. A flawed mother attempting to be just in the midst of chaos is at the center. Questions about where the film goes in the second act and how everything is resolved in the third act are inappropriate. Creative freedom can lead to wonderful things, but it can also lead to sticking to the ground rules that ensure a solid small film is delivered.
