Everything we know about the upcoming sci-fi epic 'Avatar 2'

Avatar effectively took over the world in 2009. For months, all you could hear about was the fantasy epic's unrivaled scope, incredible animation, and immersive experience - and for good reason: it felt groundbreaking at the time. However, that was over a decade ago, and director James Cameron has been talking about the sequels ever since, with production on Avatar 2 wrapping up in November 2019.

As we prepare to return to Pandora for the next installment, here's a look at what to expect in Avatar 2.

When will Avatar 2 be released?

The film will be released in theaters on December 22, 2022.

What's taking so long?

Anyone who has followed the production of the sequel to 2009's epic will know that it has been troubled to say the least.

Cameron stated in 2006 that if the film was successful, he intended to create a franchise around it - and $2 billion later, he confirmed that sequels were in the works in 2010.

However, there have been several setbacks and hiccups along the way. The film was originally scheduled to be released in December 2014, but it has since been pushed back several times.

The majority of this is due to production issues as well as franchise expansion. Initially planned as a trilogy, two additional films were added to the schedule, bringing the total to five. Cameron has insisted on finishing the planning and writing for each installment of the franchise, and now that Avatar 5's script has been completed, production on number two can begin.

Where will it be shot?

The film was shot in New Zealand, but it came at a high cost. The film studio was required by the government to commit to over $500 million in costs and agree to host a world premiere in Wellington, New Zealand.

What is the name of the sequel to Avatar?

At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, 13 years after the first film's release, the long-awaited sequel was finally given the title Avatar: The Way Of Water.

When can we expect the first official Avatar 2 trailer?

A trailer was finally released at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where attendees were given 3D glasses for a clip that contained almost no dialogue and immersed viewers in different regions of Pandora's world.

The footage also showed the local Na'vi tribe interacting with various species resembling whales and pelicans, some of which flew through the screen and into the faces of audience members thanks to three-dimensional technology.

In a pre-recorded video, Cameron stated that the sequel is "designed for the biggest screen and the most immersive 3D available," and that he "set out to test the limits of what cinema can do."

The trailer for Avatar: The Way Of Water will be released in theaters on May 6, 2022, ahead of Marvel's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

So far, we've only seen a first-look image of a new character named Miles Socorro, aka Spider, played by Jack Champion. He is Jake and Neytiri's human child. He was born at the military base on Pandora and was too young to return to Earth, so Jake and Neytiri raised him in the bioluminescent jungle.

Another image shows a "sneak peek" of the set after filming for 2019 wrapped on November 29.

Who appears in Avatar 2?

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaa, who played Jake Sully and Neytiri in the first film, will reprise their roles in the sequel. Sigourney Weaver is also set to appear in the new film, despite contradictory statements from Cameron and Weaver. Cameron had previously stated that Grace Augustine (Weaver) would return to the films despite her death, but Weaver insisted in 2015 that she will be involved but as a new character.

Cameron also confirmed that despite his character's death, Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch) will appear in the film. It's all very confusing, but then again, so is everything else in this film.

What else is known about the story?

Cameron has been relatively tight-lipped about the film's plot thus far, despite spilling the beans elsewhere. He has confirmed that humans will return as antagonists and that the film will focus more on Pandora's oceans and the rainforest. The other moons of Polyphemus will be explored in subsequent installments.

One of the central themes in Avatar 2 is family, according to producer Jon Landau. In December 2021, he told Empire, "If you look at what Jim does in his movies, he writes in universal themes that are bigger than the genre of any one movie."

"This time, we're taking Jake and Neytiri and creating the most universal theme of all." That is family. Jake is from the human world, while Neytiri is from the Na'vi. So they're like a modern mixed-race couple raising children who may feel they don't belong in either world."

"Jake took him in, but Neytiri always saw him as one of the people who destroyed her home and killed her father; so you have all these dynamics playing out," he said of new character Spider.
