LOCKED IN (2022) FILM REVIEW
Even though indie films are created within a very specific framework and do not adhere to the same rules as all films, this does not automatically qualify them as flawed films. They can make mistakes, and their characters can be stupid. Anything is permissible as long as the audience is not mocked or treated as stupid.
I say this while reviewing Locked In because, while there appear to be deliberate mistakes (and terrible decisions), the film cannot be accused of being dumb, absurd, or even bad. This is a heist film in which things go wrong and the bad guys are far more evil than you think. A flawed mother attempting to be just in the midst of chaos is at the center. Questions about where the film goes in the second act and how everything is resolved in the third act are inappropriate. Creative freedom can lead to wonderful things, but it can also lead to sticking to the ground rules that ensure a solid small film is delivered.

In Locked In, we meet Maggie, a mother who is struggling to make ends meet after her husband is imprisoned and she is forced to take over the family. She works at a storage facility and lives in a motel on the outskirts of town with her daughter. When her daughter purchases a gift for her, she chastises her because they cannot afford it. She is deeply religious, and everything she does must adhere to God's laws.
Maggie has an opportunity to obtain money when one of her coworkers engages in a shady business deal and Maggie catches him. She decides to go for it, which is unusual for her. However, thieves on the run arrive at Maggie's workplace the same night. Just as she begins to regret making easy money, she becomes involved in their scheme, which entails recovering diamonds Maggie's coworker hid somewhere. That was one wild night.
Locked In is not your typical heist film. Mena Suvari carries the film from start to finish, as she must now become the mother of a rebellious teenager while avoiding the wrath of a pair of thieves who will stop at nothing. Suvari's razor-sharp and grounded performance elevates the film's dramatic element above and beyond expectations. When it attempts to be an action film, it abruptly shifts to a dramatic thriller. Jeff Fahey plays the antagonist, who disregards rules and will go to any length to obtain the diamonds. Theirs are the best performances in the film.
And, yes, Locked In is an unusual film in which performances outperform expectations. Even if you believe characters are doing things they aren't supposed to do, you simply believe in what they're doing. The film's moral compass is skewed enough to create a volatile third act in which anything can happen, and does happen. When the twists arrive, Locked In transforms into a decent thriller centered on a character who is impossible not to care about. Call it a good script, a strong performance, or a determined director. I prefer to refer to it as a combination of good ingredients.
